My camera has a highlight protection metering mode that I use for performances with uneven lighting. It functions like a normal center weighted meter, except it will also make absolutely sure nothing in the frame is blown out.

After years of processing and being frustrated by un-natural looking landscape photos, I discovered this weekend that I'm so much happier with my output when I avoid the sliders and use only curves. Then I watched this excellent video and it all makes sense. What the video also added for me is that I can likely use the exposure, whites, and blacks with impunity, then go to curves for additional tone adjustments. Thanks so much for this!

Too bad the weather was sour, it sure can put a damper on the mood. That stream-side rubbish brought a sting of shame to my face. I've seen a few other tourist vids featuring these in-town trails, and no mention was made of trash. Perhaps the cleaning crew needs to step up the pace. Just two weeks would make a huge difference in the tree colours. Yes, not a tourist town in the typical sense. Some cruise ships operations hook up with a day trip to Gros Morne National Park. I was born and mostly raised in Corner Brook, but haven't been back for a visit since '91. Corner Brook stream is loaded with Brook trout, of which many I caught on a fly. Dour or not, I appreciate these glimpses of my own spawning ground. 😊

If you don't have a valid licence for LR you can still open a catalogue to view the images (in library module) but you can't develop them - thus develop is greyed out.

Just to those who don't now, if you don't have model or property release, you can sell the image as Royalty Free editorial. This is not mentioned in this video (guess because this video was made 8 years ago?), still good information here, thanks.

What a great video! Finally I’m beginning to understand this! Inspirerad by this i did some testing on a similar test picture. I came to these conclusions and was wondering if anyone can confirm or correct me on this: (Note, I use the point curve rather than the parametric curve) - the exposure slider behaves the same as pulling up on the middle of the curve. - increasing the contrast slider is the same as adding an “s-curve” - increasing the whites slider is the same as moving the top-right point of the curve left along the top (and correspondingly for the blacks slider and the bottom left point of the curve) As the video explain I interpret it as the shadow and highlight slider is a completely different animal compared to the exposure, contrast, whites, blacks sliders and has no corresponding action in the curves. Their main purpose is rather to bring out details in shadow/highlight areas rather than “simply” brighten them.

Thank you, Ian, for this video. Your balanced presentation made things easy to understand, and I took a lot of good points from it. I'm approaching this from a slightly different perspective, I'm photographing the theater's recently completed capital campaign as an Architectural Photographer, but I'm trying to get some shots of the theater being performed in. I may drop some into shots I will take at a later session, so I intend to drop some breadcrumbs (I have permission to make dots on the painted floor with a Sharpie) so I can take shots of the empty theater from the same locations. Another thing you didn't mention, to reduce impact, I plan on wearing all black and using the silent (electric) shutter mode on my Nikon D850. Although I rarely do this, I'll be shooting Large JPG AND RAW so I can have that extra flexibility after the production phase. Cheers, from your newest subscriber, <>Steve

Great explanation of imposter syndrome in photography, Ian. I think it bleeds into different aspects of your life. I'm a similar age and still do a few days a week as a driving instructor and I do project a certain image while teaching. I enjoy taking photographs and editing them. I actually feel that I can take quite a good photograph now but I've stopped letting anyone see them apart from my wife. I'm trying to wean myself from social media as I feel that it can become comparison hell! I'm now thinking of just concentrating on building a website and see what happens. I've sold a few prints on Etsy in the past, although I haven't tried much lately. It's not about the money, it's the buzz that someone likes your work enough to buy it.
